Rudiger opens Chelsea contract talks

Antonio Rudiger has become arguably Chelsea’s best central defender under Thomas Tuchel and would put on yet another superb showing on Tuesday evening vs Zenit

This marks a stark contrast from the first half of 2020/21, when the stopper had fallen massively out of favour under Frank Lampard.

Despite his return to favour, though, Rudiger’s long-term future at Chelsea has remained up in the air for some time now.

This comes with the German now having less than one year left on his current contract at the Bridge.

However, last month, Rudiger provided an update on his contract situation, and it did look to be good news for fans of the German, with the player confirming that he had opened talks with Chelsea over extending his deal:

Why Rudiger could be moved on

On paper, extending Rudiger’s deal does seem like a no-brainer. He is in the form of his life and at 28, is still a lot younger than Thiago Silva (36) and Cesar Azpilicueta (32).

And, as per Goal, despite interest from abroad, Rudiger would be happy to stay put in west London as long as his contract demands are met.

However, there does look to be one potential stumbling block in any potential contract extension for Rudiger.

Goal explain that whilst Rudiger is in form and wants to stay put under the right circumstances, the boardroom view on Rudiger’s situation is slightly different, with it claimed that the Blues are looking to keep the average age of their squad down and that could see the centre-back moved on:

The boardroom view regarding Rudiger’s situation may differ slightly, however, as the Blues look to keep the average age of the squad down and that could see the former Roma star moved on.
